‘Mr. Contraception’
From 2008 to 2010 I helped research and design a media strategy for a birth control campaign targeting Cambodian women in the countryside.
It was a lot of fun, and provided a fascinating perspective on how people access information in this largely agricultural and rural environment.
For a time, it was all I talked about until I earned the label ‘Mr. Contraception’.
Sadly, many women in Cambodia don’t have easy access to information about contraception. And rumors flourish in the absence of sound information. Women who attempt to use contraception for the first time often STOP because it takes time for their body to adjust… and many of them don’t have anyone informed to discuss their apprehensions with.
One key item I wanted to see was a phone number that women could call, so that even in the remotest of areas, information could be accessed.
After designing the basic approach, my time on the project came to an end. I crossed my fingers that there would be a phone number tying all the components together.
Just a few days ago, my friends at 17 Triggers webbed up these videos. I was blown away They’re funny, easy on the eye and get the point across. (Subtitled too!) And each one has that phone number splashed at the end. (Sigh of relief.) Bravo!
