Prime Minister Hun Sen and Interior Minister Sar Kheng have reiterated their instructions to the National Police to prevent a “colour revolution” movement in the Kingdom, saying the possibility of Cambodia facing one is still a threat. Officials from the ministries of Interior, and Justice, met with working group members and legal experts to review and discuss a draft law concerning identification methods in the country. Ministry of Public Works and Transport authorities detained 298 vehicles for being over the weight limit and fined their drivers over 505 million riel ($126,250) in April. The government has issued a plan to reduce electricity tariffs for companies in four key sectors — manufacturing, agriculture, commercial and service, for five months starting from June to encourage them to continue working during the spread of Covid-19. Cambodian Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries on May 20 signed an agreement with the International Rice Research Institute (IRRI) aiming at improving the country’s rice sector through promoting research and enhancing productivity and resiliency. |

Oddar Meanchey provincial governor Pen Kosal said while more than 15,000 migrant workers had returned from Thailand amid the Covid-19 pandemic, no one had illegally returned through the province’s three border checkpoints. Three Cambodian peacekeepers who have been fulfilling their mission in Mali have been diagnosed with COVID-19, bringing the tally to six in the country. The Bar Association of the Kingdom of Cambodia (BAKC) has set up a legal office in all 25 municipal-provincial prisons to make it easier to maintain confidentiality between lawyers and clients in preparation for court proceedings. |

Oxfam and four other organisations have kick-started a month-long social media campaign to mobilise a million supporters to send the message to world leaders that when a Covid-19 vaccine is found it must be free and fairly distributed to everyone on the planet. Dozens of migrant workers in Banteay Meanchey province tried to sneak into Thailand since to seek jobs despite the Thai border being locked down to prevent the spread of coronavirus. Dissident Kung Raiya, who faces up to four years in prison on charges related to his printing of T-shirts with murdered political analyst Kem Ley’s image and words, said he does not expect justice when the court’s verdict is announced next month. Former staff of The Great Duke Phnom Penh hotel who were laid off protested to get compensation wages while the Labour Ministry said it will source funds to pay compensation wages to them. |
