It was great fun to slip into my academic shoes and talk about comics at the Women’s Manga Beyond Japan Conference at the National University of Singapore!
Manga is indeed all over the planet, and a particular focus was the localization of Manga, with guests from Malaysia, Singapore, Argentina and Korea amongst others. Women are the driving force behind this art form, here’s one of my favorite examples: shojo Obama!
Lots of new friends, new ideas, and new comics.
It was great to catch up with John Lent & Ying Xu (International Journal of Comics Art) as well revisiting some friends from the Asia-Europe Foundation and the Liquid City Crew! Cheers to the Japan Foundation for funding my visit.
Next: finalizing my paper on Cambodian Manga manifestations for publication! More photos, video and cartoons: http://www.delicious.com/slugdog/singaporeshojofeb2011
